November 2018

Mosaic Guild November 2018 planning meeting Notes

Thank you all for coming to the planning meeting for 2019. Shelley had a full house and we had really great ideas and participation.

We had the assemblage of the Monet challenge at this meeting. I believe we had all but two pieces in place. If someone has a good picture of it please share it with the group. The colors are so beautiful and perfect for the spring show in Hopkins.

Future show dates:

Hopkins Show -will be from Thursday March 28th to Saturday May 11, 2019. Delivery and Installation will be Tuesday March 26th and removal May 12th.

A reception will be held on Thursday March 28th from 6 to 8:00.

I have two members, plus myself so far to hang the show. This is not enough people so please consider helping us. Right now I have Shelley, Kristen and myself hanging the show. I hope that we can have two pieces per person. Please start sending me information so that I have an overall count of the number of people that want to have a mosaic or two in the show. We only have one wall so I will let you know if we can handle two pieces per person once I get information back from you.

Hutchinson show-

The Hutchinson Center for the Arts 2019 exhibit has been accepted! Below are some details on the space and event:

  • Exhibition Dates: July 15 - August 23, 2019

  • Approx. 130 - 150 linear feet of wall space plus pedestals for 3d work.

  • Work does not need to be for sale.

  • If artist elects to have it for sale, it is a 70 (artist) / 30 (center) split.

  • They will help with some of the food for the reception and wine is allowed (date TBD)

  • "The space is essentially a fish bowl - lots of windows and a big glass garage door. I strongly encourage some members come for a site visit to get a sense of the possibilities. One reason I selected your group was the hopes you would work with our large windows in some capacity."

Maria has sent out a copy of the contract and I think everyone has had the time to review it.

*If you want to see pictures of the space you can look it up as Hutchinson Center for the Arts.

December 12th is the Mosaic group’s pot luck and tesserae exchange at my home.

We will each make a mosaic greeting card for our annual mosaic guessing game.

For anyone new to the group at the December Pot Luck we have people sign up to bring a dish to share and I will have the main part of the meal. I will send out a sign up list right after Thanksgiving. We have a tesserae gift exchange and we make a game out of guessing which artist matches up with our greeting card mosaic challenge. A gift card will be given to the person with the most correct guesses.

I have lined up an opportunity for a month long show in January at a store at 5006 Xerxes Ave. South. The business is called Vinaigrette. They sell infused oils and vinegars. If you go to their web site you will get some idea of the space. There are windows in the front that can hold glass on glass pieces. I am waiting to get their liability form which I will forward to all. They do not take a commission but anyone interested in purchasing calls the artist directly. My guess is that the mosaics will not be insured. There is a reception and we would need to pay for the food. We are allowed to have wine if we choose to. They want us to provide an undressed salad and they have people at the store during the reception that can show guests how to dress the salad with their oils and vinegars. I need to know how many people are interested in having pieces at this store. It is a good location and I have purchased many of their oils and vinegars so I can attest to the quality.

I hope we can get about 10 to 15 people to participate. Please let me know ASAP on this one so I can confirm with the owners that we have enough people to make a nice show. We need to hang this show too so I would need volunteers. Even if you can only participate for one or two hours in one of the shows it would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the challenges that were decided upon and the locations for the meetings:

February- Laura Lee’s home-Make any size mosaic incorporating a mirror.

April- Kristin Dieng’s home- Any 3D piece, so it could be a trinket box, a vase, a sculpture, candlestick holder are a few examples.

June- Shelley’s home- Any size mosaic, a glass on glass piece with a garden theme. Any size and hopefully we can display some of them at the Hutchinson show.

September- Lisa Vitkus home- Again any size. Theme is a city scape. It can be a metropolis or a small town or anything in between.

November- Susan Mathis home- We plan on having each artist making a square for a quilt. Unlike the Monet and Van Gogh challenge we will not have all the quilt squares kept together, but we may hang them together at a show if there is enough participation. We have not narrowed down a theme or color scheme and it was agreed that we need to have a common tile used for the borders of each square.

At this time we will need a place for our Potluck in December.

I am looking forward to hearing back on several of the volunteer opportunities.

Regards,

Trudy
