Mosaic Guild November meeting notes 2016:
Phipps Show Info: Title -Breaking Assumptions
Show will run from October 27th to Dec. 3rd 2017.
Drop off will be on Wednesday October 25th from 9:30 to noon.
We have the 25th and 26th to hang the art. We are responsible to hang the show.
We should have three groups of two or three people to install the art.
Two rooms and hanging dividers are available, and pedestals for 3D pieces.
Reception on Oct. 27th. There will be four other shows/artists at the same time.
Phipps provides the food and punch. They request that we make a donation and pay something extra if we think that we will have over 150 guests.
Artwork needs to be picked up between 9:30- 5:00 on Dec. 4th. There is a $35 a day fee for items not picked up.
Phipps takes 40 % of a sale and if a commission is generated from the show they ask for a 10% commission back to the Gallery. Art is insured once it is at the premise.
We discussed having cards of our work in their gift shop, small mosaic items for sale and those items could stay thru the holidays for their Holiday gift sale. An idea was brought up that some from the group could teach a mosaic class that coincides with the show. Please let me know if you have an interest.
They have a brochure called the marquee and we would be listed in it. They also have a rack card. We need to decide how we want to have the Guild represented on this card .Post cards are done by Phipps for their use. These cards would feature all five artists/ artist groups. We can pay them to run extra cards for us but they would just mail them out to one central address. We can make up our own cards. I believe the consensus at the meeting was that we do want to make up our own card
Meetings for 2017:
December Pot Luck at Amy Leyden’s house. Address is 5509 Pleasant Ave. Mpls. 55125. We will have a group challenge where each person will bring a mosaic ornament that they have made. In the past we have guessed which artist created each ornament and had a prize for the person that had the most correct answers.
Also at this get together Amy will have some options for a challenge that we will start in February and complete by our June meeting. We will make a large copy of a famous painting and have each person (that chooses to participate) mosaic a portion of that selected picture. We will have the guild supply the base material so that all the squares will match. These squares can be hung together at a future show and it will showcase all our different styles.
Date for the pot luck is December 14th. Amy will send out an email asking for people to sign up for what they are bringing for food. I believe in the past we have started at 6:00 pm.
February 8th- Meeting will be at Mimi Leminh’s house. The challenge for those of you who wish to participate is to make a mosaic (of any size) that uses a minimum of 25% materials that can be found in a hardware store. The rest of the piece can be any material that you like. At this meeting we will have the squares that we will use for our group mosaic.
April 12th-Meeting at Lisa Ferguson’s house. This challenge is to create a piece of art for the garden (big or small) anything you would like.
June 14th- Will be at my home. This is when we will bring our square of the picture that we are all creating together. In addition we can have a materials swap if enough people are interested. We have done this the past two years.
September 13th- For this meeting we will make a mosaic with left over glass from past projects (a way to use up scrap glass). The theme will be that the piece conveys an emotion. It can be any emotion. We will guess what emotion the artist was feeling. We need a place to meet in September. If you can volunteer your home that would be great!
November 8th- Susan Mathis will have this meeting. This will be our 2018 planning meeting. No challenge is planned but if you our working on something please bring for us all to see!
December Pot Luck- We need a volunteer home at this time.
Thank you all who came to Rebecca’s home to help plan 2017 and thank you so much to Rebecca for having us to her home. Thank you Rachel for bringing three potential new members.
